Dozens poisoned at HTS-run prison in Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of prisoners at a facility operated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, once known as al-Nusra Front), in Idlib Governorate, northwest Syria, were poisoned on Monday after consuming their lunch in their cells.

North Press correspondent reported, citing an administrative source within HTS’ Harem police, that 30 detainees were rushed from Harem Prison to a local hospital. Some of the affected prisoners are reportedly in critical condition due to the poisoning.

The source added that HTS’s security forces have restricted all visits to the detainees and have withheld information about their conditions from their families until further notice.

The poisoning occurred in a dormitory that houses prisoners charged with security offenses.

The prison administration has attributed the incident to the meal served, though there is skepticism about whether the poisoning was intentional, the source added.

Notably, the contaminated meal was distributed across all dormitories, yet only the prisoners in this particular dormitory were affected, he noted.
