Gunmen attack governor of Syria’s Daraa leaving behind injuries

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Unknown gunmen targeted on Wednesday the convoy of Daraa’s Governor in southern Syria using an IED, causing injuries to several police officers who were escorting the convoy.

The IED, planted by unidentified individuals, exploded as the convoy was traveling on the road between the city of al-Hirak and the town of Elmah in the northeast of Daraa.

The governor of Daraa, Luai Kharita, was accompanied by Baath Party branch secretary Hussein al-Rifai, and several government officials to attend the inauguration of a new department in the al-Hirak Hospital.

A local source told North Press that ambulances transported the injured to Daraa National Hospital.

The source added that the government forces in the targeted area remain on high alert as they intensified the security presence in the city and blocked roads leading to the Hospital.

This marks the second assassination attempt against Kharita since taking office.

In October 2023, Kharita survived an assassination attempt on the Damascus-Daraa highway near the town of Mahajjah in northern Daraa.

Meanwhile, one of his companions sustained moderate injuries at the time and was transported to the Daraa National Hospital for treatment.
