Turkey deports more than 19,000 Syrian refugees in August

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Border crossings in north Syria recorded on Sunday that Turkey deported more than 19,000 refugees in August 2024.

Officials at the border crossings said that Turkish authorities deported more than 19,200 refugees, including 4,850 women and children and individuals with special needs, via five crossings in north Syria.

This is the highest monthly deportation number of Syrian refugees in 2024, as Turkish authorities continue to expel Syrians from the country.

The deportees were received by security forces of the Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions.

In more detail, over 11,000 Syrians were deported through the Bab al-Salama, al-Rai, and Jarablus border crossings in northern Aleppo.

Moreover, 6,300 refugees, including nearly 1,900 women and children were deported through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing in northern Idlib.

The Tel Abyad border crossing in northern Raqqa reported a total of 2,100 deported Syrians during August.

The forced deportations of Syrians by Turkey have increased in the past two months following the racist attacks against them.

While Turkish authorities describe the return of refugees as “voluntary,” most returnees refuse to sign the return forms, and the United Nations has emphasized that the conditions are unsafe for refugees to return.
