Germany’s Scholz to increase deportations after Solingen mass stabbing
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday his government would increase deportations following a mass stabbing in Solingen perpetrated by a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) member from Syria.
“We will have to do everything we can to ensure that those who cannot and are not allowed to stay in Germany are repatriated and deported,” Scholz told reporters during his visit to Solingen.
“This was terrorism, terrorism against us all,” he added.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack that took place on Aug. 23 during a festival in Solingen, which resulted in the killing of three people and injuries to eight others.
Scholz revealed that deportations have already risen by approximately two-thirds compared to 2021 levels.
He stated that the government is exploring legal and practical methods to further increase deportation numbers.
Authorities intended to deport the suspect in the attack to Bulgaria last year, according to European Union asylum regulations.
However, the deportation attempt did not succeed because the man was not present at his refugee accommodation when officials tried to execute the deportation.
