Resolving Kurdish issue key to Syrian peace process – AANES official
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A top official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) stressed on Wednesday that the Syrian government must accept a decentralized system of governance, underscoring that any resolution to the Syrian conflict must first address the Kurdish issue.
Ilham Ahmad, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the AANES said that the Syrian government needs to implement changes immediately and accept the decentralized system of the AANES.
Ahmad added that the Syrian government either acknowledges Kurds’ rights, or faces a dead end.
She called on the Syrian government to formally recognize Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights, as well as the rights of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the AANES within the framework of the Syrian constitution.
Ahmad highlighted the lack of progress noting that despite numerous attempts to engage in dialogue, the Syrian government’s continued obstruction highlights a broader denial of Kurdish rights and a significant barrier to peace.
