U.S. official says Iran’s militias threaten stability of Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – An official of the U.S. Department of State said on Saturday that Iranian-backed militias threaten the stability and security of the Middle East in general and Syria in particular.

The official told North Press that the Iranian-backed militias including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other groups under Iran’s command threaten the regional stability and security.

“These forces play a particularly destabilizing role in Syria, threatening prospects for a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” the official who preferred anonymity added.

On Aug. 7, Iranian-backed militants launched a ground attack, supported by shelling of the government forces, from the western bank of the Euphrates River and infiltrated villages and towns in areas held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor.

The attack led to casualties among civilians and caused damage to a water pumping station and destroyed homes.
