U.S. to deploy 230 American troops to Syria, Iraq
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Oregon National Guard announced on Friday that it will send 230 U.S. troops to the Middle East to fight the Islamic State (ISIS).
Before going to Syria and Iraq, the soldiers will receive training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma to enhance their abilities in operating rockets, artillery, and drone defense systems.
The deployment comes at a time of tension in the region as Iranian-backed militias renewed attacks against U.S. troops and bases in Syria and Iraq.
Only 2,500 U.S. troops have remained in Iraq since 2021, merely in an advisory role, whereas there are 900 soldiers in Syria focused on fighting ISIS.
After their training is finished, the U.S. troops will go to Iraq and Syria to support Operation Inherent Resolve in the fight against ISIS.
Their mission is to work with local partners to “secure lasting defeat of terrorist elements” in that region, as stated by the Oregon Military Department.
