Nearly 400 children repatriated from Syria, Iraq to Kyrgyzstan – UNICEF

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – UNICEF said on Tuesday that nearly 400 children have been repatriated from Syria and Iraq to Kyrgyzstan since 2019.

UNICEF added that it continues to offer psychological support, healthcare, and essential services to all 396 repatriated children from Syria and Iraq.

This effort has been carried out in collaboration with various government ministries in Kyrgyzstan and receives financial assistance from the European Union and the United States, the organization added.

In July, Kyrgyzstan repatriated 22 people from Kyrgyzstan, including eight women and 14 children, from Hawl and Roj camps in northeast Syria, bringing the total number of repatriated children to 396.

The U.S. Department of State praised the repatriation and pointed out that since early 2023 the Kyrgyz Republic has repatriated 454 nationals through U.S.-assisted operations, including 121 people in 2024. ”

The EU, since 2021, and the U.S., since 2023, have been sharing the funding to support these children.

“Bringing the children home is a big and important step, but there is a lot of work ahead to make sure they adapt to their communities and live a full life as children,” said Marilyn Josefson, Ambassador EU delegation Kyrgyzstan.
