Syrian government-affiliated militias attack SDF in Deir ez-Zor
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Militias affiliated with the Syrian government forces attacked on Tuesday night areas held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.
In a statement, the SDF said “Syrian regime-backed mercenaries” and groups of the Iranian-backed National Defense Forces (NDF) launched a ground attack against areas on the eastern banks of the Euphrates River, east of Deir Ezzor.
“This attack, supported by indiscriminate and heavy artillery and mortar fire, triggered fierce clashes between our SDF’s Military Councils of Deir Ezzor and Hajin with attacking groups in the vicinity of Dhiban, Al-Latwa, and Abu Hamam,” the SDF added.
The shelling resulted in the killing of two civilians and the injury of five others in the towns of Diban and Latwa, in addition to other civilian casualties in the town of Shuhail, east of Deir ez-Zor, according to the SDF.
The SDF indicated that its forces repelled the attack and “are currently conducting clearance operations to eliminate any remaining threats posed by the attacking groups.”
