Unknown gunmen kill driver of fuel tanker in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Unknown gunmen killed on Wednesday a fuel tanker driver in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria.
A local source told North Press that unidentified gunmen in a van opened fire with a machine gun at a group of fuel tankers transporting diesel along the main road in the town of Abu Khashab in north of Deir ez-Zor.
The source added that the attack resulted in the killing of a tanker driver and the injury to his companion.
The attack also caused material damage to other tankers, while the attackers managed to escape.
Two days earlier, unidentified gunmen targeted fuel tankers in the town of Shuhail in eastern Deir ez-Zor, causing material damage.
Moreover, gunmen attacked on July 14 fuel tankers carrying crude oil in the Syrian Desert in central Syria, killing two men.
Cells linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) have previously targeted fuel tankers after threatening their owners and extorting them to pay zakat to the group.
On July 9, four ISIS militants targeted oil tankers in the village of Burayha in the east of Deir ez-Zor, causing material damage.
