The EUAA’s monthly report for May 2024 showed that 12,000 Syrians applied for asylum, which remained consistent with the previous month, but still lower compared to the seven-year peak of October 2023.

Germany was the leading destination for asylum seekers with 19,000 applications, approximately 22 percent of the total number of asylum seekers in May.

Spain followed with about 16,000 applications, accounting for over 19 percent of the total.

Then came Italy with around 16,000 applications, reaching nearly 18 percent of the total.

Meanwhile, Ireland, with a population of approximately 5.3 million people, received about one application for every 2,600 residents, taking the lead for most applications per capita.

The U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR) states that Syria has the biggest refugee crisis globally, with more than 12 million Syrians forced to leave their homes due to conflict and instability.

Roughly one million Syrian asylum-seekers and refugees live in Europe.
