Family of U.S. man killed in Syria sues Syrian government

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The family of an American therapist killed in Syria filed on Monday a civil lawsuit against the Syrian government, accusing it of abducting, torturing and killing him.

The lawsuit filed by Majd Kamalmaz’s family, including his four children, widow, and sister, in federal court in Washington D.C. accuses Syrian officials of intentionally killing him and trying to hide the circumstances surrounding his death.

On June 11, U.S. Department of State recognized the death of Kamalmaz who had disappeared in Syria seven years ago.

Kamalmaz travelled to Syria to provide medical care to people affected by the Syrian war. The last time he was seen was at a checkpoint controlled by the Syrian government in 2017.

The lawsuit seeks financial compensation for wrongful, assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false imprisonment.

The plaintiffs also seek punitive damages, bringing the total claim to at least $70 million.
