QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A United Nations (U.N.) top official said on Monday that the escalation in Syria “remains undiminished” and called on the U.N. members to proceed the political solution.
U.N. Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said the threat of escalation within Syria remains undiminished, adding that clashes have erupted in the south and the north of the country.
Pedersen’s speech came during the U.N. Security Council Briefing on the Political and Humanitarian Situations in Syria.
He stressed the necessity for de-escalation that will lead to a ceasefire in Syria as a whole.
Pedersen called for the end of “anti-refugee rhetoric and actions,” indicating that Syrians must be protected wherever they are.
He noted to the necessity of the continuation of efforts to create the conditions for safe, voluntary and dignified returns for the Syrian refugees.
“The conflict is ultimately a political one that can only be resolved when the Syrian parties are able to realize their legitimate aspirations and Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity are respected and restored,” the U.N. official said.
He appealed to the U.N. members to proceed the political process in line with the U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.
