U.S. sanctions Iranian company for part in chemical weapons development

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. imposed on Friday sanctions on Iranian company for involvement in Iran’s chemical weapons research and development.

The Department of State said in a statement, the U.S. is designating the Hakiman Shargh Research Company “for engaging or attempting to engage in activities or transactions that materially contribute to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by Iran.”

The U.S. imposed this sanction following repeated calls for Iran to follow the rules of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Since 2018, the U.S. has found Iran to be in violation of the CWC for not fully disclosing its chemical weapons-related activities and facilities, the statement added.

In 2024, the U.S. assessed that Iran breached the CWC by developing pharmaceutical-based agents for a chemical weapons program.

The statement asserted the U.S. would continue face any attempts by Iran to create chemical weapons, “including those that may be used by its proxies and partners to support Iran’s destabilizing agenda of inciting and prolonging conflict around the world.”
