U.S. court jails Uzbek man for lying about brother fighting in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A U.S. court sentenced on Wednesday an Uzbek citizen to a month in prison for lying to federal law enforcement about his brother fighting in Syria and in immigration proceedings.

U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Connecticut said in press release that Sidikjon Mamadjonov from Uzbekistan, 37, will not serve additional time in prison because he already spent a month in prison. He also received a one year of supervised release.

On May 27, 2013, Mamadjonov left to Turkey and discovered his brother, Saidjon Mamadjonov, had been killed while fighting in Syria, which he withheld from federal authorities.

Mamadjonov was arrested in 2017. After going on trial in 2023, a jury found him guilty of three charges of making a false statement to law enforcement, and one charge of providing false information during an immigration procedure.

According to the statement, Mamadjonov immigrated to the U.S. in February 2009, settled in Connecticut, and obtained legal permanent residency status in September 2010.
