Iraqi court sentences wife of former ISIS leader to death
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – An Iraqi court sentenced on Wednesday the wife of former Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to death for detaining kidnapped Yazidi women.
The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced that al-Karkh Criminal Court sentenced the wife of al-Baghdadi to death as she was found guilty of working with the group and detaining Yazidi women in her house.
The council said in a statement that the woman, known as Asma Mohammed, detained some Yazidi women who were kidnapped by ISIS in Sinjar (Shengal) district in Nineveh Governorate in her house.
Two Yazidi women had filed lawsuits against Mohammed for complicity in kidnapping and enslaving them along with other Yazidi women. They called for the death penalty.
In August 2014, ISIS killed thousands of Yazidis and kidnapped more than 6,000 others during its attack on Sinjar. Most of those kidnapped were sold as sex slaves by ISIS militants in markets in Syria and Iraq.
Several Yazidi men, women and children are still missing or held by ISIS, and thousands are still enduring harsh conditions in IDP camps.
