Jordan FM warns of ongoing smuggling of drugs, weapons from Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi warned on Wednesday about the dangers arising from the ongoing smuggling of weapons and drugs from Syria into Jordan.

In a statement released by the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Safadi stressed that Jordan will take all necessary actions to eliminate these dangers and protect its national interests and citizens.

This came during a meeting between Safadi and Russian President’s Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev in Jordan’s capital Amman.

Both officials discussed the situation in Syria and expressed their joint commitment to finding a political solution in Syria that is in line with the aspiration of the Syrian people and creates a conducive environment for refugees to return voluntarily.

Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, there have been many attempts to illegally enter Jordan and smuggle drugs into the country, with most of these activities coming from Syria and Iraq.

Jordanian authorities frequently announce thwarting drug and weapon smuggling attempts on its border with Syria.

The latest of which was on June 29, where Jordanian security authorities killed a drug smuggler and arrested others linked to regional smuggling networks during a tactical operation in the town of al-Ruwaished.
