CENTCOM announces killing of senior ISIS leader in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States (U.S.) Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday the killing of a senior leader of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

The CENTCOM said, via its official X Platform, that its forces conducted on June 16 an airstrike in Syria that resulted in the killing of a senior ISIS leader.

The ISIS leader who was killed is known as Usamah Jamal Muhammad Ibrahim al-Janabi, adding that there was “no indication any civilians were harmed in this strike.”

Following the announcement, Head of the Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Farhad Shami, praised the CENTCOM for killing al-Janabi, adding that al-Janabi was based in Afrin in northwestern Syria, a region that has been under the Turkish occupation since 2018.

Commenting on the incident, the Interim Government, the political wing of the Turkish-backed armed opposition factions aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), claimed that the SDF killed a civilian during an airstrike on an IDP camp in Afrin.

“… this once again clearly reveals the scale of the deliberate misinformation for groups that work for Turkey from Syria, this is an attempt to protect ISIS leadership and present them as a civilian,” Shami added.

“His death will disrupt ISIS’s ability to resource and conduct terror attacks,” the CENTCOM said. “CENTCOM, alongside allies and partners in the region, will continue to execute operations to degrade ISIS operational capabilities and ensure its enduring defeat.”
