U.N. Migration says 6 million Syrian refugees require support
QAMISHLI ,Syria (North Press) – Six million refugees from Syria and other nationalities across Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt require some form of humanitarian and development support, a U.N. organization said on Thursday.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a press release more than 19 million people, including six million Syrians, in the neighboring countries require some form of humanitarian and development support.
“This includes almost six million refugees from Syria and other nationalities, compared to 4.27 million refugees in 2015,” it added.
The IOM indicated that “nearly 13 million crisis-affected host community members, compared to one million affected host community members in 2015.”
The release came following the Ministerial meeting of Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” that took place in Brussels on May 28 during which the international donors committed 7.5 billion euros ($8.1 billion) in grants and loans to assist Syrians affected by conflict, poverty, and hunger.
“We must stand with the people of Syria,” said IOM’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Othman Belbeisi. “The humanitarian needs remain high as millions of Syrians continue to live outside their home country, often relying on humanitarian aid to survive.”
Millions of Syrians continue to be affected by ongoing hostilities, water and food shortages, protection issues, and lack of access to basic services, the IOM concluded.
