IIIM head calls for accountability

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Head of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) called on Wednesday on the international community to support the international justice actors in pursuing accountability for Syria.

Robert Petit, head of the IIIM, underscored the crucial role of justice and accountability in building a future Syria grounded in the rule of law.

In his speech at the 8th edition of the Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the region”, Petit highlighted the ongoing atrocities and the impunity gap, stating, “More than ever, the answer must be accountability.”

Petit urged the attendees of the conference to continue their support with tangible contributions.

“Justice and accountability require time and resources,” he added. “This applies to both the United Nations and civil society actors alike. I call on you to fund the broad range of international justice actors pursuing pathways to accountability.”

He indicated that the IIIM is preparing to provide support in the form of a report on the Syrian detention system, and that a version of the report will be made public.

The 8th edition of the Ministerial meeting of Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” that took place in Brussels on May 28 pledged 7.5 billion euros ($8.1 billion) in grants and loans to assist Syrians affected by conflict, poverty, and hunger not only this year but also into the future.
