EU member states push to designate IRGC as terrorist organization
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Germany, along with several other European countries, urged on Monday the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization based on a German court ruling.
The German Press Agency (dpa) reported on the sidelines of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels citing diplomats that multiple countries in the EU, including Germany, are pushing to officially label the IRGC as a terrorist organization on the basis of a German court ruling.
The German legal ruling in late 2023 was made by the High Court in the city of Düsseldorf, which found that a 2022 attack on a synagogue in the city of Bochum was ordered by “an Iranian state agency.”
The legal service of the Council of the EU reviewed and verified that the ruling issued in Düsseldorf in December could be sufficient as a basis for an EU terror list of the IRGC, according to EU diplomats.
Moreover, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has frequently expressed her support to add the IRGC to a list of designated organizations.
However, it is uncertain if there is enough support from the 27 member states of the EU to reach a majority vote for the listing.
