UK charges man with terrorism offenses for travelling to Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A man has been charged with terrorism offenses for travelling to Syria to fight for armed faction, the UK police service said on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police stated that a man named Isa Giga has been charged with “the intention of committing acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention, namely travelled to Syria to fight for the ‘Jaysh Al Fath’ groups.”

Jaysh al-Fatah, or the Army of Conquest, an Islamist armed faction formed in March 2015, mainly operates in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria.

Upon his return to London from Turkey, Giga was arrested by the police. The 31-year-old appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded into custody ahead of another hearing at the court on May 31.

The UK has prosecuted many individuals for terrorism offenses over the years.

On May 20, the Metropolitan Police stated that Farhad Mohammad, aged 45, was convicted of terrorism offenses for sending money to his nephew, who was fighting for the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front), a proscribed terrorist organization in the UK.
