U.S. House approves Hope for Syria Act to boost aid, security in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. House Committee on Armed Services included on Wednesday, May 22, the Hope for Syria Act to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to enhance humanitarian aid and security in Syria.

The Act introduced by Rep. Joe Wilson to the House Committee on Armed Services, a standing committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, includes provisions such as prohibiting recognition or normalization of relations with the “Assad regime,” in addition to developing a strategy to protect the United States and partner forces at al-Tanf Garrison in Syria from the threat of Iranian-backed militias, the Islamic State (ISIS), Russia, and the Syrian government.

Moreover, the act includes providing aid for civilians in Rukban IDP camp near al-Tanf, reporting on the “Assad regime’s” activities with ISIS, and countering threats to national security posed by Iranian-backed militias in Syria.

The announcement was made by the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), Citizens for a Safe and Secure America (C4SSA), and Global Justice.

“The adoption of this amendment is important for the provision of humanitarian aid to internally displaced civilians in need in Rukban camp, near the US al-Tanf Garrison, as well as for the protection of US forces in the region,” the announcement read.
