U.S. calls Syrian government to avoid escalation in Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Department of State called on Wednesday for Syrian government to refrain from attacking protests in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria.
The Department called on parties of the conflict to avoid violence.
This came in a meeting between Ethan Goldrich, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and Maher Sharafeddine, an intellectual from Suwayda.
U.S. Embassy in Syria announced via its official X Platform that Goldrich met with writer and intellectual from Suwayda Maher Sharafeddine.
It added that both Goldrich and Sharafeddine discussed the “continued support for Syrian people’s right to peaceful assembly.”
The emabssy urged the Syrian government “to refrain from attacks on peaceful protests in Suwayda,” and called on all parties to avoid violence.
Via his official X Platform in Arabic, Sharafaddine said he discussed the issue of the military build-up in Suwayda during an important meeting at the National Security Council of the White House.
He added that he discussed the issue of Syrian detainees at Roumieh Prison in Lebanon.
Recently, tension has escalated in Suwayda due to several events that took place consequently, when the Syrian government forces arrested an academic student in Latakia. Then, local groups detained military and security officials of the government in Suwayda. As a result, the government forces sent military reinforcements to the governorate.
