YPJ thwarts plan for “major” ISIS attack in Raqqa

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) announced on Wednesday foiling a plan for an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in the countryside of Raqqa, northern Syria.

The YPJ’s Media Center stated that on May 3 their forces carried out a joint operation along with Anti-Terrorism Units (YAT) of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against ISIS cells in the east of Raqqa.

Founded in April 2013, the YPJ is an all-female force that is mainly made up of Kurds but includes other ethnic groups in Northeastern Syria. It operates under the umbrella of the SDF.

After receiving information that “ISIS cells were preparing for a major attack in Raqqa city,” YPJ forces arrested four ISIS militants during the operation.

The YPJ did not specify in which area in Raqqa they carried out the security operation.
