Syria, Iraq sign memorandum of security cooperation

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian and Iraqi governments signed on Sunday a memorandum of security cooperation in Baghdad to control their joint borders.

Syrian Minister of Interior, Mohammad Khaled al-Rahmoun, and his Iraqi counterpart, Abdul Amir al-Shammari signed the memorandum that contained five fields. 

The signing of the memorandum came during a visit paid by al-Rahmoun to the Iraqi capital on Saturday.

Al-Shammari said the memorandum included provisions for cooperation between the Syrian and Iraqi governments in combating drug trafficking, border control, extradition of suspects, combating organized crime, and money laundering.

He emphasized that all agreed-upon measures and issues would be implemented promptly. 

Al-Rahmoun said the presence of criminal activities were conducted by drug trafficking and human trafficking gangs.

He added that they signed a security cooperation memorandum to cooperate in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, cyber security, and in rehabilitation and training to enforce the law.

He noted to the “past successful cooperation” in combating drug trafficking by dismantling networks and seizing drug shipments.

The Iraqi minister extended an invitation to Syrian police students to participate in training courses offered by institutions of Iraqi Ministry of Interior.
