AANES expresses readiness to cooperate with rights organizations
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced on Sunday its readiness to collaborate with human rights organizations, saying that Amnesty International’s accusations are groundless.
The Foreign Relations Department of the AANES said, in a statement, that the Amnesty International completed its report with the help of the AANES, and it should have made sure of its allegations.
On April 17, 2024, Amnesty International issued a report titled “Syria: Mass death, torture and other violations against people detained in aftermath of Islamic State defeat.” The report mentioned several topics related to the post-military defeat of ISIS.
The report examined the issue of ISIS militants in the detention centers that are run by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the U.S.-led Global Coalition. It also commented on the conditions of the women and children in the camps and rehabilitation centers.
The report accuses the AANES and its relevant judicial, security, and military institutions of committing human rights violations that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to the report.
At the end of the report, a set of recommendations for the AANES, the Global Coalition, and countries that have nationals in detention centers and camps, in addition to the relevant international bodies were set.
The AANES statement underscored that the Amnesty’s staff did not visit the detention centers in Hasakah Governorate, Northeast Syria, saying that they may relied on testimonies and interviews with people affiliated with ISIS or its sleeper cells who are out of the detention centers.
The AANES reiterated calls on the international community to fulfill its commitments regarding supporting the AANES to cover the needs of the camps that host ISIS family members and the detention centers, saying that they need substantial financial resources that the AANES cannot cover.
The region is facing political and security challenges, especially the Turkish attacks that undermine security and stability, the statement warned.
