Armenian institution organizes lecture on 1915 genocide in Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) The Armenian Social Council in the city of Qamishli in Northeast Syria organized on Saturday a lecture titled “The Armenian Genocide of 1915” that was committed by the Ottoman Empire on April 24, 1915.

The Armenian Social Council was established in the city of Hasakah on April 24, 2020, to address Armenians’ affairs in Northeast Syria.

Hanna Somi, a researcher in Indigenous Peoples and Genocide Affairs, said the purpose of the lecture was to tell the Kurds, Syriacs, Arabs, and Armenians about the ideology of Mustafa Kamal Ataturk, Sultan Abdulhamid and Turkey.

The Armenian Genocide refers to the deliberate and organized campaign of mass murder and forced displacement of over 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, as supported by historical records.

He told North Press that these actions are part of a long history of genocidal acts spanning a thousand years.

Somi indicated that Erdogan continues killing civilians in Northeast Syria region including Arabs and Kurds, and changing the demography of the region.

He called on the Turkish government to officially recognize and acknowledge the Armenian genocide, emphasizing that the international community is well aware of the genocide, backed by substantial evidence and proof.

The Armenian Genocide began on April 24, 1915, when Ottoman authorities arrested and deported around 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders from Constantinople to the Angora region. The majority of them were subsequently killed.

In 2020, the Syrian parliament recognized the Armenian genocide.
