QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. House of representatives is scheduled to vote on Tuesday on the “Illicit Captagon Trafficking Suppression Act” to strengthen the U.S.’ policies against the “Assad regime’s” captagon drug trade.
The Act, if approved, issues new sanctions against entities, individuals and networks affiliated with the Syrian government that facilitate and profit from the production of captagon and holds them accountable.
Hill had previously stated, “The Illicit Captagon Trafficking Suppression Act, will further press the Assad regime by imposing new sanctions to directly target individuals and networks associated with the production and trafficking of this drug.”
“To ensure stability in the region, the U.S. government must continue to work with our allies and partners and put pressure on stopping the proliferation of this dangerous drug,” Hill said.
The bill, also known as “Captagon II,” was introduced in July 2023 by U.S. representative for Arkansas, French Hill, and Florida’s Rep. Jared Moskowitz. It passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously (44-0) in November 2023.
