Kosovo charges ISIS suspect for crimes against Yazidi women in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Kosovo’s Special Prosecution said on Friday it indicted a suspect for crimes against Yazidi girls and women while he fought for the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria and Iraq.

The Special Prosecution said in a press release the suspect, a Kosovo citizen with the initials M.D., was charged with crimes against humanity and serious violations of laws of armed conflicts.

“These charges were committed against girls and women of the Yazidi community during the conflict in Syria and Iraq during 2014- 2017 and this criminal case has now been transferred to the Special Department of Pristina Basic Court,” the Special Prosecution said.

On Aug. 3, 2014, ISIS killed thousands of Yazidi men and kidnaped more than 6,000 Yazidis during its attack in 2014 on Sinjar. Over half of them remain missing, according to official figures.

Most of Yazidis were sold as sex slaves by ISIS militants in markets in Syria and Iraq.

After the Syrian conflict started in 2011, about 300 Kosovars joined ISIS to fight in Syria. Since 2014, the Kosovo prosecution has indicted over 120 Kosovo nationals for charges related to terrorism and more than 100 others are still under investigation.
