Irish troops arrive home from Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Over 130 Irish troops arrived on Friday home from Syria after ten years of peacekeeping by the armed forces in the area.

The withdrawal represents the last of the Irish troops in Syria, as the Defense Forces ends its peacekeeping mission in the Golan Heights.

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established in May 1974 following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan. UNDOF remained in the area to maintain ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces and supervise the implementation of the Disengagement Agreement.

Ireland has been involved in the mission since June 2013.
