AANES to hold municipal elections in May

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced on Thursday that it would hold municipal elections in its areas on May 30.

The announcement came after the AANES’ High Electoral Commission held its first meeting in the city of Raqqa. The commission was founded in February and consists of 20 members.

Hussein al-Sheikh, co-chair of the commission, said the aim of holding elections was to form the municipalities’ councils and their co-chairmanships in northeast Syria region.

The commission is tasked to prepare the voter registry for those who meet the voting requirements, approve the list of political entities and independents, set the date of the elections, and decide on appeals against election results.

The commission has committees in the governorates of northern and eastern Syria, including the Electoral District Office, the Supervision and Audit Office, and the Appeals Office.
