Iran-backed militias tighten security measures in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Iranian-backed militias intensified on Wednesday security measures and inspection in the city of Deir ez-Zor and its countryside, eastern Syria, following airstrikes on Iranian-linked sites.
A source told North Press that Iranian-backed militias sharpened security measures and inspection on checkpoints in the al-Joura and al-Qusour neighborhoods in Deir ez-Zor city.
The Times of Israel said the Israeli forces targeted on Tuesday at dawn sites linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “involved in attempts to smuggle advanced arms to West Bank terrorists,” adding a Quds Force officer was among the casualties.
The militias also prevented people from approaching the sites that were targeted in the airstrikes, especially two headquarters in the al-Villat neighborhood and raised Syrian flags overhead, the source added.
Moreover, multiple patrols roamed the town of al-Mayadin in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor and several others stationed in the southern entrance to the town near the al-Tayyba Roundabout.
Additionally, the militias deployed militants in posts located near residential neighborhoods in al-Mayadin, whereas the majority were concentrated in IRGC posts in the areas of al-Haydariya and Shibli in the desert of al-Mayadin.
The source said the tight security measures caused panic among the population in Deir ez-Zor and al-Mayadin as they fear new airstrikes would target the Iranian-backed militias’ posts near residential neighborhoods.
