Participation of NE Syria in political process crucial – U.S. official

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Ethan Goldrich, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said on Monday that the participation of representatives from northeastern Syria in the political process for the future of Syria is necessary.

Goldrich remarks came during his participation in Syria Strategy Project that was launched by the Atlantic Council, the Middle East Institute, and the European Institute for Peace in collaboration with civil society organizations.

In addition, French Special envoy to Syria Brigitte Curmi and German Special Envoy to Syria Stefan Schneck also participated in the project.

Goldrich said, responding to a question about the participation of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) in the Syrian negotiations, “All of people in Syria need to be represented in the political process. We can bring people from northeast Syria into the discussion.”

This will be “a step forward to have voices from the region and from the various political movements,” he added.

Goldrich stressed that “speaking to people from the region about the structure of the future of Syria” is crucial.

Meanwhile, Curmi stated that France supports every effort when Syrians come together to be stronger at the negotiating table with the Syrian government. She emphasized that people of northeastern Syria should not be excluded from negotiations.
