QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Jordanian army said on Monday it detected aerial movement on the border with Syria without identifying the source.
The Jordanian army said in a statement its aircraft hovered along the border with Syria in response to an alert of radar systems that monitored aerial movements from an unknown source.
The Jordanian aircraft ensured the safety of Jordan’s airspace and that there was no threat, according to the statement.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October 2023, there have been tit-for-tat attacks between Iranian-backed militias and U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria.
Officials have said that Jordan, which signed a defense agreement with the U.S. in January 2021, aims to enhance its defenses against Iranian-backed militias building up strength along Jordan’s borders with Iraq and Syria.
On Jan. 28, three U.S. troops were killed and 34 others were injured in a drone attack that hit an American base in northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border. The attack was linked to Iranian-backed militias.
Jordan also conducted airstrikes on hideouts of drug dealers in Syria that Jordan links to Iranian-backed militias citing their border intrusions as a direct threat to its national security.
