EU receives 108,950 asylum applications in November 2023 – Eurostat
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The statistical office of the European Union (EU) Eurostat said on Tuesday number of asylum applications, mostly Syrians, increased by 11 percent in November 2023 compared to November 2022.
The asylum data of November 2023 showed 108,950 first-time asylum applicants coming from outside of EU applied for international protection in EU countries, whereas in November 2022, they amounted to 97,800.
The data pointed out that Syrians continued to be the largest group of asylum-seekers with 23,460 first-time applicants. Next came Turks with 12,870 applicants, then Afghans with 7,930, Venezuelans with 6,175 and Colombians with 5,445.
Moreover, subsequent applicants totaled 6,375, which is a three percent increase compared to 6,215 applicants in November 2022.
Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Greece continued to receive the highest number of asylum applications, which accounted for 82 percent of all first-time applicants in the EU, according to Eurostat.
The highest rates of registered applicants in November, 2023, were recorded in Cyprus (154.8) and Greece (98.9) compared to the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2023).
The data also indicated that 3,510 unaccompanied minors, mainly coming from Syria(1,230) and Afghanistan (580), applied for asylum in EU countries in November 2023.
Moreover, Germany received the highest number of unaccompanied minors with 1,365 minors, next came the Netherlands with 615, Italy with 315, Greece with 305, and Bulgaria with 265.
