Dutch Court convicts Syrian citizen of committing war crimes in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A Dutch court recently convicted an individual associated with the Syrian government of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria.

The Dutch court convicted Syrian citizen Mustafa A., who used to work for the Syrian government, of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In January 2013, “a group of men carrying Kalashnikov rifles approached another man. Their faces were hidden behind balaclavas and they smelled of alcohol,” according to Just Security.

The group were supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. They arrested the man and handed him over to Syrian Air Force intelligence officials who detained and tortured him, according to the source.

This verdict represents a significant stride towards accountability for the atrocities committed in the Syrian conflict.

The conviction of Mustafa A. is connected parts of the global response to the years-long Syrian war.
