Jordanian soldier injured in clashes with smugglers coming from Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the Jordanian army reported that one of its soldiers was injured in clashes with smugglers while foiling a drug smuggling operation from Syria. The clashes also led to casualties among the smugglers.
Continuous clashes erupt on the border between members of the Jordanian army and drug smugglers. Jordan accuses Iranian-backed militias in Syria of smuggling drugs and posing a “regional threat” to the kingdom.
In a statement, the Jordanian army stated that it thwarted an infiltration and drug smuggling attempt from Syrian territories early this morning.
“The operation resulted in the death of three smugglers, the injury of others, and the confiscation of substantial quantities of drugs, which were promptly handed over to the appropriate authorities,” a source from the army told state-run Jordan News Agency.
The source said that a member of the Jordanian border guards was injured in the clashes. “During the stand-off with the smugglers and the enforcement of rules of engagement, a member of the border guard forces sustained injuries. The individual’s condition is reported as critical.”
