Officials say U.S. succeeds in damaging 84 targets in Syria, Iraq

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. destroyed or damaged 84 out of 85 targets in its recent airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, according to the CNN, citing two U.S. defense officials.

The officials said, citing a preliminary battlefield damage assessment, that 84 out of 85 targets were “destroyed or functionally damaged.”

On Friday, U.S. forces targeted facilities of Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria in response to a drone attack on Jan. 28, targeting a U.S. base in northeast Jordan. The attack resulted in the death of three American soldiers and in the injury of 40 others.

The so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, Iranian-backed militias, claimed responsibility for the attack.

A complete post-strike analysis is still underway, but one official said there are no indications that members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed as part of the operations, according to the source.

The U.S. attacks in Syria alone resulted in the killing of at least 20 militants of Iran-backed groups and the destruction of at least 26 sites in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.
