23 Iran-backed individuals killed in U.S. strikes in eastern Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – 23 individuals of Iranian-backed militias were killed on Saturday at dawn in U.S. airstrikes on their posts in eastern Syria.

A military source of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) told North Press that the airstrikes targeted military posts and warehouses of the Iranian-backed militias, as an airstrike hit two warehouses in the village of Ayyash, west of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria. As a result, the targeted warehouses were destroyed completely.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted on Friday airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against the IRGC, Quds Force and affiliated militia groups.

The strikes come in response to drone and rocket attacks that targeted the U.S. Tower 22 base in Jordan near the Syrian border late in January and killed three U.S. service members and injured over 40 others.

In addition, a warehouse in al-Ommal neighborhood in the city of Deir ez-Zor, a headquarters of the IRGC in Deir ez-Zor military airport, three military posts in al-Mayadin countryside, and a patrol of the IRGC in al-Haydariya area, east of Deir ez-Zor, were hit by the U.S. warplanes.

The airstrikes hit two trucks loaded with munitions coming from Iraq near al-Sikak crossing, according to the source.

The source said that as a result of the airstrikes, 23 militants, including three Iraqi nationals, were killed. He said that the toll is expected to rise as there are injured individuals.

The airstrikes also targeted posts of the IRGC near the Syrian-Iraqi border; in the  village of al-Heri, east of Deir ez-Zor; in al-Sinaa neighborhood in the town of Abu Kamal; and in Bor Saeed neighborhood in the city center, according to the source.

Another source said that many Iranian-backed military leaderships deployed among residents houses in coincidence with the U.S. airstrikes.

Since the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, American bases in Syria and Iraq have been targeted by Iran-backed militias, and almost all of these attacks have been claimed by the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iranian-backed militia.
