Iran-backed group claims attack killed U.S. troops

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed militias, claimed on Sunday its responsibility for the attack that targeted an American base in Jordan near the Syrian border, which resulted in the killing of three American soldiers and the injury of more than 30 others, according to U.S. officials.

The Islamic Resistance said in a statement that it targeted on Sunday four American bases, three of them in Syria: in Shaddadi, Rukban, and al-Tanf. As for the fourth base, it is located inside Israeli territory, specifically the Zevulun naval facility.

The statement added that it will continue to launch its attacks against the American bases in support of the Gaza Strip, the statement reads.

Earlier, the Pentagon’s Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that three American soldiers have been killed and 25 others have been injured in a drone attack on a U.S. base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.

However, Jordanian Minister of Government Communications Muhannad Mubaidin told the state-run al-Mamlaka TV that the attack did not occur on Jordanian soil but rather targeted the U.S. base of al-Tanf in south Syria near the shared border with Iraq and Jordan.

In response to the attack, U.S. President Joe Biden stated, “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.”

“We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing,” Biden added in his statement released by the White House.

Similarly, Vice President Kamala Harris stated on X, “We will continue to fight terrorism, and we will hold all those responsible to account.”

Republican Senator Tom Cotton, in a statement published on X, called for a “devastating military retaliation against Iran’s terrorist forces, both in Iran and across the Middle East.”
