Russian warplanes strike ISIS in Syrian Desert
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Russian warplanes launched on Saturday evening airstrikes on the Islamic State group (ISIS) in response to an unidentified missile attack on a Russian military base in the Syrian Desert.
A military source of the government forces in Homs Governorate, central Syria, told North Press that the Russian Sukhoi warplanes launched more than eight strikes on various areas of the Syrian Desert, mostly on the vicinity of the city of Palmyra and the town of al-Sukhnah in the east of Homs.
The source said that two missiles hit the Russian military base at the Tiyas Military Airbase, also known as the T-4 Airbase and the T3 station in the Palmyra Desert, east of Homs. The attack led to flames amid heightened security measures by the Russian forces that have not disclosed any losses, according to the source.
The source added that the attack on the Russian military base is considered the first of its kind, as the base had not experienced any previous attacks given that the surrounding area is entirely controlled by military forces and overseen by the Russian forces.
