Missile hits ISIS detention center in Syria’s Hasakah
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Al-Sinaa prison, which holds Islamic State (ISIS) detainees, in the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria was hit by a missile on Tuesday morning, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a statement.
At 7:30 local time, the al-Sinaa prison was attacked by a missile, the SDF said, adding that the missile hit the Cubs of the Caliphate department of the prison.
The attack led to the injury of a number of ISIS detainees, the statement read.
The SDF pointed out that during that attack, the ISIS detainees tried to escape, but their forces thwarted the attempt.
Al-Sinaa prison houses about 3,500 ISIS detainees, alongside more than 700 minors — the so-called “Cubs of the Caliphate.” It is not the only prison holding ISIS detainees.
On Jan. 20, 2022, the group’s sleeper cells carried out a series of attacks on the prison to set free their fellow inmates. The prison attack sparked a 10-day battle between the SDF and ISIS militants and caused a mass exodus of residents of the neighborhoods of Guweiran, al-Zuhour, al-Nashwa, and Villat al-Hamr to the central and northern neighborhoods of Hasakah.
On Jan. 30 of the same year, the SDF announced taking full control of the prison, and on Jan. 31, the General Command of the SDF uncovered the toll of casualties of the ISIS attack, 374 ISIS militants were killed, and 121 people, including 77 employees and workers of the prison, 40 SDF members and four civilians, were killed.
