Turkish strikes in NE Syria amount to war crimes – SDF chief
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – TheCommander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, said on Sunday that the Turkish bombing of infrastructure facilities in northeastern Syria amounts to “war crimes.”
On Saturday night, Turkish warplanes targeted eight sites in northern and northeastern Syria: four in Tirbe Spiye (al-Qahtaniya) in northeastern Syria, one in Derik in the same region, and three in Manbij in northern Syria.
The attacks targeted infrastructure facilities in the region, including the Sweidiya gas plant in the countryside of Derik, leaving residents without power.
“Frequent targeting of infrastructure and civilians’ means of livelihood in NE Syria for 3rd time in a year is a policy of starvation and occupation,” said Abdi on X platform.
Between Oct. 5-9, Turkish forces conducted similar airstrikes that nearly paralyzed the region after knocking vital infrastructure out of service. And on Nov. 20, 2022, the same happened with Turkey bombing SDF-held areas on the entire border strip.
The General likened these attacks to “war crimes” that “target our people and the region’s stability.”
Abdi called out the Turkish attacks, noting that they occurred during a peaceful time when people were getting ready to celebrate the upcoming new year.
“Despite people’s preparations to receive a new year hoping for peace and stability, and despite our continued efforts with the partners to achieve stability, Ankara insists on its aggressive policies and exporting its internal crises.”
