Newly elected head of SDC welcomes dialogue with all Syrian actors
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The newly elected co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) said on Thursday they welcome dialogue with all Syrian parties who seek a political solution that guarantees a democratic, decentralized, and pluralistic Syria.
Layla Qahraman, SDC’s new co-chair, told North Press that the Council calls on the Syrian opposition, actors, and people to come together and unite as they will determine the future of Syria.
“The guarantee for a solution of the Syrian crisis is the unity of all Syrian actors,” Qahraman said.
She pointed out that currently there are no prospects for a political solution in Syria, adding that, “even the Syrian Constitutional Committee was and still is dysfunctional and has not been able to fulfill its responsibilities adequately.”
The SDC is a real project on the ground in Syria and represents the hopes and aspirations of the Syrian people. It depends on the intra-Syrian dialogue, she added.
Moreover, eight years after the formation of the SDC, it has played a crucial role and accomplished a significant shift in this stage of the crisis, according to Qahraman.
On Dec. 20, the SDC held its fourth conference and announced reshaping its structure. The SDC included new Syrian opposition figures and presented a roadmap for a political and peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.
The conference was held in the city of Raqqa in northern Syria, a city that was once the so-called capital of the Islamic State terrorist group (ISIS) where it witnessed all kinds of exclusion and beheading. The same city is now hosting representatives from all Syrian communities to discuss the unification of the Syrian parties and seek a solution for the conflict their country has been going through for more than a decade.
The founding conference of the SDC was held in the city of Derik (al-Malikiyah) in the far northeastern Syria in December 2015. The Council is seen as the reference and the political umbrella for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
