Russia talks resuming work of Syrian Constitutional Committee
QAMISHLI, Syria (North press) – On Wednesday, Sergey Vershinin, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, held a meeting with Geir Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, with the objective of restarting the UN-guided Syrian Constitutional Committee.
The committee, whose first meeting took place in October 2019, aims to facilitate dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition, seeking to achieve a political settlement in the country.
Vershinin stated that an “extensive” exchange of views took place on the current situation in Syria, including in the context of the unprecedented escalation in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
They emphasized making coordinated efforts for boosting Middle East stability, and highlighted the negative impact of sanctions.
They also addressed the issue of the declining UN budget in Syria, and underscored the importance of impartial distribution of humanitarian aid throughout the country.
