11 detainees escape SNA prison in Syria’s Tel Abyad
TEL ABYAD, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday morning, 11 detainees escaped from the Turkish-affiliated Military Police’s prison in the city of Tel Abyad, northern Syria, amid accusations of complicity against the prison’s administration.
An official in the Turkish-backed Military Police told North Press that the detainees, who were held in separate cells, escaped through the back door of the prison, which is used for emergencies.
Among those who escaped is Talal al-Turki – a former leader in the Sultan Murad faction, affiliated with the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) – who is accused of drug smuggling and killing civilians on the Syrian-Turkish border, in addition to detaining Iraqis and Syrians under bogus charges.
The source said that the Turkish intelligence has asked for urgent investigation into all prison personnel, starting from the administration to the guards, while the search for the escapees continues.
He noted that the investigation is no more than an “official and routine procedure” and is unlikely to yield results, given that previous investigations into past escape cases failed to result in the re-arrest of escapees.
