U.S. holds ‘Syrian regime’ accountable for economic downturn

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Embassy in Syria held on Saturday the “Syrian regime” accountable for the economic downturn and said that Syria continues to rank as one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

The embassy said on X that “the economic downturn in Syria is predominantly due to mismanagement and corruption.” The tweet came in coincidence with the International Anti-Corruption Day.

International Anti-Corruption Day has been observed annually, on Dec. 9, since the passage of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption on Oct, 31, 2003 to raise public awareness for anti-corruption.

“Do not be fooled by the Assad regime’s assertions,” the embassy added.

In the tweet, the U.S. Embassy held the “Syrian regime” responsible for the mismanagement and corruption.

Syria has been experiencing a severe economic crisis for several years. The high inflation rate in Syria has had a devastating impact on the country’s population, with many struggling to afford basic necessities such as food, housing, and healthcare. The ongoing conflict in Syria, coupled with the economic crisis, has led to a humanitarian catastrophe, with millions of Syrians displaced and in need of aid.
