Global Coalition members discuss in Rome anti-ISIS efforts in NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Italy hosted on Tuesday a meeting for the Small Group of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. U.S. and Italian representatives informed partners on counter-ISIS efforts in Northeast Syria and other regions.

The U.S. Department of State said in a joint statement, United States Deputy Special Envoy for the Coalition Ian McCary, along with Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Political Director Pasquale Ferrara, “updated partners on collective efforts to counter ISIS in northeast Syria, Iraq, sub-Saharan Africa, and Central Asia.”

The statement added that the Global Coalition remains committed to adjusting its counterterrorism strategies in response to the changing threat landscape.

As for Northeast Syria, the Coalition members concurred “to prioritize respective efforts addressing humanitarian and security needs in displaced persons camps and detention facilities,” to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS in the region.

The Coalition agreed to revise its Guiding Principles, which “highlight the increasing regionalization of Coalition efforts and emphasize the pivotal role of civilian-led initiatives to counter ISIS and its global affiliates.”

The members were also pleased with 2023 Coalition Stabilization Pledge Drive for liberated areas of Syria and Iraq, stressing the importance of their implementation.

The Global Coalition emphasized that it remains “united and resolved in its determination to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS wherever it attempts to operate, and to hold ISIS terrorists accountable under criminal justice systems,” the statement concluded.
