EU’s Frontex joins search for sunk ship crew near Greece

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The European Union’s Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex joined on Monday the search for 12 crew members, including Syrians, who went missing after a cargo ship sank near the island of Lesbos in Greece.

The ship, Comoros-flagged Raptor, had 14 crew members, including two Syrians, eight Egyptians, and four Indians. It was transporting salt from Alexandria in Egypt to Istanbul when it sent a distress signal before sinking.

One of the Egyptian crew members was rescued. Meanwhile , a commercial vessel that helped in searching for survivors recovered the body of another Egyptian member.

Frontex patrols and monitors the Lesbos area for illegal migration. They sent a surveillance aircraft and a patrol boat to join the Greek coast guard search.

The agency assists EU and Schengen countries in managing external borders and fighting against cross-border crime,
